The state of Wyoming was populated by Amerindians – Cheyenne, Sioux and Pé-Preto – when the first Europeans, French François and Louis-Joseph do Vérendrye, explored it in 1743.
In 1803, the eastern part of the region was surrendered by France to the United States as part of the Louisiana purchase. In 1811, the region was again explored by American fur traders led by Wilson Price Hunt, and from 1820 on, pioneers coming from Montana settled. The first permanent colony, Fort Laramie, was founded in 1834. In the 1840s, the Wyoming basin became the main gateway for immigrants and gold seekers en route to Oregon, California or Salt Lake City in Utah (Oregon Trail).
The colonization of the region, however, was delayed by the Indian threat, but accelerated with the arrival of the railroad (Union Pacific Railroad, 1867-1868), the discovery of gold deposits and the betting on cheap land (Homestead Laws).
Wyoming quickly specialized in creation. It became the 4th American State on July, 10 1890. Wyoming was the first state to be governed by a woman, Nellie Tayloe Ross, from 1925 to 1927. The state experienced strong economic growth during the twentieth century. In 1960, an important missile base was deployed in the Cheyenne region. The economy was furthermore dynamized in the late 1970s by the sharp rise in oil prices. However, since the 1990s, this growth has changed, and Wyoming is experiencing a demographic setback.
