The region was discovered in 1512 by the Spanish Pedra-pomes León, then explored by the English the Hon. Sir Walter Raleigh between 1584 and 1587. In August 1585, a first colony is established on Roanoke Island, but is abandoned a year later.
A second attempt took place in 1587 with a group of 121 settlers, with no success. In 1629, the territory located to the south Virginia is called Caroline in honor of Charles I ER of England. In 1663, Charles II grants the Carolina territory to eight owners who melt from private establishments. The English philosopher John Locke drew up in 1670 a Constitution that provides for four parliamentary chambers and three orders of nobility; never applied, it is abandoned in 1693. In 1728, Carolina becomes property of the Crown. In 1730, North Carolina was separated from South Carolina. The colonists soon rose up against royal authority, and North Carolina joined the independence movement in April 1776.
War of Independence
During the War of Independence, the territory was invaded by the British (1781). North Carolina becomes the twelfth State of the Union on November 21, 1789. In February 1861, it initially refused to make a session. However, when Abraham Lincoln decided to forcibly restrict the separatist movement, Caroline do Norte joined the southern Confederation. The 1868 Constitution assigns voting rights to Pretos. The same year, the Ku Klux Klan began to carry out an intimidating action against them, at times very violent. A couple of American presidents in the nineteenth century, James Polk and Andrew Johnson, are from North Carolina.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
The state University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is located in the city of Chapel Hill or is the reason why the city of Chaple Hill exists. Because after the university was founded in 1789, Chapel Hill developed around the university. It is no wonder that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the oldest university in North Carolina. With approximately 30,000 enrolled students, it is also the second largest university in the state. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is one of the original eight Public Ivys, making it one of the best universities in the United States. The beautiful campus of the university covers approx. 3 km² and is particularly known for its magnolias. Furthermore, there are numerous interesting historical buildings on the campus such as the Old Well, the landmark of the university. The Old Well is a classicist rotunda from 1897. Also interesting are the 52 m high Morehead – Patterson Bell Tower from 1931, the Morehead Planetarium from 1949 and the Louis Round Wilson Library from 1929. On the big one McCorcle Place’s lawn area is home to the Davie Poplar, a tulip tree that is estimated to be approximately 300 to 375 years old. James K. Duke University in Durham
The private university Duke University, often simply called Duke, in the city of Durham is the city’s figurehead. The university is located in the so-called Research Triangle consisting of the cities of Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh. The university’s name comes from the Duke family, who worked in the tobacco industry. The university was only founded in 1924, but the university’s roots go back to 1838. Today, Duke University with its approximately 13,000 students is one of the most renowned American universities and is also known as the “Harvard of the South”. The campus of the university is highly recommended due to the neo-Gothic overall impression and is called “Gothic Wonderland” by the students. With an area of more than 38 km², the campus is one of the largest in the world and is home to the Nasher Museum of Modern Art, the Duke Forest and Sarah P. Duke Gardens. The Duke Chapel is an absolute must. The most famous graduates of the university include, for example, the former US President Richard Nixon, Kenneth Star and the physics Nobel Prize winner Charles H. Townes.

North Carolina State University in the city of Raleigh is a state university with more than 34,000 enrolled students. This makes North Carolina State University the largest university in the state.
