The state was populated by Amerindians – Algonquins and Iroquois. The first European to reach New York Bay is, in 1524, the Italian explorer Giovanni IP Verrazano – who sails for the account of France -, whose name was given to one of the most notable bridges in New York City, the Verrazano- Narrows.
