Upon the arrival of the first Europeans, the region was populated by indigenous Indian tribes (Wichitas, Pawnees, Kansas, Apaches). The Spaniards, commissioned by Francisco de Coronado, toured the region in 1541. There was a trade in the skin from 1682 to 1739.
The region was sold by Napoleon Bonaparte to the United States in 1803, at the same time as Louisiana. The first American explorers in 1804 were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark (Lewis and Clark expedition, 1804-1806). Kansas territory was open to settlers on May 30, 1854. Dissensions immediately divided these: Was Kansas going to join the Union as a slave state or as a non-slave state? These divisions persisted during the Sécession war and gave rise to bloody confrontations between slavery and abolitionist colonists. Kansas finally joined the Union in 1861 as a free (non-slavery) state. Southern guérillas was victim during Sécession war. The development of railways (Union Pacific, Santa Fe) in the years that followed was the cause of the state’s prosperity.
During the 1870s, agriculture took on a new dimension when a variety of wheat, resistant to harsh winters, was introduced in the state. In 1900, any Kansas colonized. The mechanization of production and the commercialization of products brought agriculture into the great American capitalism, during the twentieth and century. The exploration of the subsoil (fossil energies) and the implantation of new industries (aeronautics) allowed the economy to diversify.
