The public education system includes a compulsory and free six-year elementary school for 6-12 year olds. The superstructure consists of a two-year and a four-year level; the latter is divided into a general, a technical and a professional line.
Higher education takes place at four universities, two in Kinshasa and one in respectively. Kisangani and Lubumbashi, as well as a number of other, predominantly private colleges.
